Music Maneuvers That Matter: Up Close And personal With Tony Barre
Issue 9.16
IN Magazine
By Russell Poncik
His fantasy and erotic inclinations come to life in his music. His third compilation of tracks entitled Barre Maneuvers
is finding an audience outside the immediate dungeon and fetish audience and he is more than happy to share the
ride with anyone open to listening. He is Tony Barre.
"The mind is a wonderful thing to unleash," he says, "and a sizeable portion of my work comes from
the sometimes-dangerous neighborhood between my ears." The new CD features hot and intriguing tracks like
"De-Briefing," "Room To Maneuver," and "When the Smoke Clears," all favorites of
the artist. The trance-like erotic sounds are easily accessible for a dance crowd. While the music is very personal,
Tony insists that, "I have learned to let go, understanding that others will hear a meaning unique unto their
experience. As an artist, I merely make suggestions."
He starts with a theme for each work, but ultimately lets creativity lead the way and is involved with every aspect
of his projects, including the cover art, marketing, and distribution. Tony maintains that the joys and headaches
of any business are best weighed by one’s own sense of self at the end of the day. Quite simply, he says, "I
love what I do." He was recognized with an Out Music award nomination for his second title.
When he’s not busy making music, writing lyrics, or exploring conceptual ideas, Tony enjoys gardening and taking
care of his special someone. He’s been in a wonderful relationship for 16 years and refers to his partner as his
hero. Originally from Long Beach, Tony calls Palm Springs home these days after family matters brought him to the
desert.
"I have played drums and been a vocalist in various bands over the years and I like the rush of the live exchange
with listeners," he states. Performing is something he wants to do more of and he was overwhelmed by a very
positive response to his music during the recent West Coast Rubber event. His next project should be ready for
consumer consumption in the early part of next year and he hints that he may even sing on an upcoming release.
Regarding the catchy song titles and plays-on-words, he comments, "Yes, they are. I like stimulating thoughts
and … other things as well. I have been told by listeners that the music is good for the scenes." He is at
work planning dance remixes and giving some serious consideration to doing some covers. The current disc includes
a remix by DJ M. Arana of "After the Dance" from his first release.
"I am a very spiritual guy," he confides and "simply being" is the one thing he is most thankful
for. He thrives on feedback from his audience and is always open to musical suggestions. "I want to know what
people like and what clicks for them when they experience the music. It’s part of the process for me."
Tony’s CD Barre Maneuvers is available in Palm Springs at Gear, Q-Trading, and Tuff Stuff Leather in addition to
several retailers and distributors around the world. All three of his releases and an assortment of other novelty
items, including a very sensual poster taken from the Barre Handed CD, are available online. Learn more and take
